Species-rich Churchyards

We have worked with a number of churches to recognise, protect and enhance the species rich grassland graveyards often turn out to be.

With the loss of over 95% of species rich grassland across the UK in the last century, graveyards are an important repository of species we will need if we are to begin recovering this endangered habitat.

At Woodhurst church we have found a balance of neatness through mown pathways and areas allowed to grow wild and be managed as if it were a meadow. We’ll take a hay cut come September and a secondary cut to remove further nutrients late October. Our ultimate goal is to graze a few sheep over the winter!
